 There are three clinical units, each with two Consultant general surgeons, one Senior Specialist (senior registrar), one Specialist (registrar), two Medical Officers (senior house officer) and two Interns (pre-registration house officer).
 
Each of the Consultants has developed a special area of interest besides his general surgical skills. These include, vascular surgery, minimally invasive surgery, hepato-biliary and pancreatic surgery, breast surgery, endocrine surgery, gastro-esophageal surgery and colorectal surgery.

OUTPATIENT SERVICES
Each surgical team has two outpatient sessions per week. At each session, of three hours duration, four senior staff attend on outpatients in separate rooms.  The department is a tertiary referral center for general surgical cases for the whole country. Specialized clinics are also conducted in Vascular, Breast, Endocrine and Colorectal surgery.
 
 INPATIENT SERVICES
The department of surgery has 34 male beds, 4 of which are high dependency beds, and 26 female beds, 3 of which are high dependency beds. There are also patients admitted to the VIP and Special Nursing Ward and in the Intensive Care Unit, under the care of one of the teams.
 
The total number of admissions per month is about 166 patients; 50% elective 40% emergency and 10% internal transfer from other specialties within the hospital.
 
Each team conducts one main ward round a week attended by both consultants of the team, and daily working round attended by the senior registrar.
 
EMERGENCY SERVICES
To provide surgical emergency services to a population of 600,000 in the capital and its suburbs, the department operates a 1-in-3 rota for the junior staff and 1-in-6 rota for the consultants.
 
OPERATIVE SERVICES
The department undertakes about 150 operative procedures per month, 32% major, 50% intermediate and 18% minor.  60% of the procedures are electives, 30% are emergencies and 10% are semi-emergencies.  Each team has two operating rooms on its main operating day.
 
UNDERGRADUATE TRAINING
All the consultants are affiliated senior lecturers to the Sultan Qaboos University.  The department runs an active teaching program for the 5th and 7th year medical students, which include seminars, bedside teaching, an examination and on the spot assessments.
 
POSTGRADUATE ACTIVITIES (CME)
There is active CME program in the department in the form of grand round one hour per week, clinical presentation one hour per week, journal club one hour per week and x-ray meeting one hour per week.  Once monthly activities include, audit, mortality and morbidity and clinico-pathological meeting.
 
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES
The department plays a major role in arranging international surgical update in the Sultanate of Oman every two years in collaboration with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.  Local and international speakers are invited to present papers on various topics and arrange workshops to stimulate research activities.  All the medical staffs in the division of surgery are encouraged to participate in this event.
 
PUBLICATIONS AND RESEARCH
All the staffs are encouraged to publish scientific papers and to participate in research work. All staffs are also encouraged to attend and participate in International Conferences, Workshop and Advanced Surgical Training Courses.
 
ACHIEVEMENTS
Since the commissioning of the Royal Hospital, the Department of General Surgery has made the following achievements:
  • Recognition by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh for Pre-Fellowship Basic Surgical Training and part of the Higher Surgical Training.
  • The Department is approved center for MRCS examinations (MCQ1 & MCQ2).
  • The Royal Hospital Surgery Division with the Surgical Department at the Sultan Qaboos University is a recognised center for Basic Surgical Skills Course run by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
  • In December 1998 the First Advanced Laparoscopic Training Course took place and similar courses will take place in the future.
  • The development of subspecialties in the Department was started in 1994 and is being actively promoted.
