The 3 clinical units provide general surgery coverage at the secondary-care level for patients from Muscat region. Additionally, each of the Consultants focuses on the following sub-specialty areas – vascular surgery, minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, hepato-biliary and pancreatic surgery, breast surgery, endocrine surgery, gastro-esophageal surgery and colo-rectal surgery.
The department at Royal Hospital is the only set-up in Oman performing open heart surgery. The number of surgeries performed in 2005 included 348 patients for coronary artery bypass graft, 185 open heart surgeries for congenital heart disorders and valvular defects, 70 closed heart surgeries and 60 thoracic cases.
PAEDIATRIC SURGERY
All babies with surgical congenital anomalies born in Oman are referred to this clinical unit through the SCBU. The department further provides general surgery coverage to all children in the capital-area and children with surgical conditions referred by the regional hospital. The department operates on approximately 100 ‘index case’ neonates per year (where a grading of 50-60 index cases per year is considered to be a viable, busy unit.).
UROLOGY
The Urology service includes general and reconstructive urology, endoscopic urology, two ESWL units, urodynamic laboratory and living related donor kidney transplantation. Major cases operated upon include cancer of the uro-genital organs, repair of pelvic ureteric obstructions, vesico vaginal fistula, urethroplasty, colposuspension for urinary incontinence, urinary diversion and bladder reconstruction.
DENTAL SURGERY
The Dental unit at Royal Hospital is a ‘one chair’ service meant only for immuno-compromised out-patients and inpatients, patients being prepared for heart or renal surgery and for inpatients who require emergency dental care. All other cases are referred to the main Dental Department at Al Nahdha Hospital.
TRAINING
The Division is involved in clinical teaching of medical students of the Sultan Qaboos University and training of Surgical Residents of the Oman Medical Specialty Board. In association with the Sultan Qaboos University and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, it has been organizing regular training programs in basic surgical skills.
