rh_dep_scobgynThe Department has 126 maternity beds, spread over four wards: 1 ward for Antenatal patients, 1 ward for Gynae patients and 2 Postnatal wards.

The Department is divided into four section which includes the following:

Section 1 – Feto-Maternal Medicine with the following Senior staff -
Dr. Majida Al Irhayim, FRCOG, Sr. Consultant and Unit Head
Dr. Anita Zutshi, FRCOG, Sr. Consultant
Dr. Seerat Minocha, MRCOG, Sr Specialist
This unit is a combination of two sub-specialities:
(i) Maternal Medicine
Maternal Medicine unit is involved in management of pregnant women with maternal diseases such as hypertension, cardiac disease, haematological disorders, neurological disorders, renal disorders, thyroid disorders and patients with HIV.
(ii) Fetal Medicine
Fetal Medicine and High Risk pregnancy unit looks after the management of pregnancies where fetus is at risk due to a congenital anomaly or Rhesus isoimmunization, patients with intrauterine growth restricted fetus, pregnancy with previous history of recurrent pregnancy losses and other high risk pregnancies like multiple pregnancies, etc.

Section 2 – Reproductive Medicine + Endoscopic Surgery with the following senior staff –

Dr. Sharifa Saif Zaid Al Mahrizi, MRCOG, Sr. Consultant
Dr. Mary Jacob, MD, Sr Specialist
This unit is dedicated to the management of sub-fertile patients, adolescent gynaecology and patients who are amenable for endoscopic surgery.

Section 3 – Oncology with the following Senior staff –
Dr. Usha Sharma, FRCOG, Sr. Consultant and Unit Head
Dr. Chitra Jha, MRCOG, Sr. Consultant
This unit manages all oncology patients referred from the whole country. 

Section 4 – General Obstetrics and Gynaecology with the following Senior staff
Dr. Bernadette Punnoose, MRCOG, Sr. Consultant
This unit is involved in the management of all patients with diabetes in pregnancy as well as obstetric patients such as those who had multiple caesarian sections or those with abnormal placenta localization which need to be followed up at a tertiary care level. The unit also sees to the management of patients with gynaecological problems who are referred from secondary care regional hospitals and health centers. 

FACILITIES AND ACTIVITIES
The Department is recognized for training for membership of Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists, London, MRCPI (Obst & Gynae), Ireland and Arab Board. It is also affiliated to the Sultan Qaboos University College of Medicine for undergraduate training.  Further, the Department is one of the main centers of the Oman Medical Specialty Board for post graduate training of residents specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

The department has 22 permanent staff constituting of 7 Consultants, 6 Sr. Specialists, 9 Registrars and other junior staff mainly comprising of medical officers and the residents, who come to Royal Hospital on rotation. The consultants are permanent staff in the section but all the other staff rotate to the different sections.

  • Audit Meeting
  • Still Birth Meeting
  • Caesarian Section Meeting
  • Prenatal Meeting
  • Journal Club meeting
  • Outpatient statistics


Every three months the following CME meeting are conducted:

  • Joint Haematology -  OBG Meeting
  • Joint Pathology – OBG Meeting
  • Ob/Gynae Club Meeting (where all the obstetricians and gynaecologists of Oman meet for CME activitiy)

It has 13 delivery beds, one of which is an isolation room for patients who are in labour with contagious disease. There are also 4 observation beds for patients who need close observation prior to transfer either to the Delivery beds or to the wards. It is supported by a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (with 30 baby cots) which is adjacent to the Delivery Suite. The delivery suite takes care of all high risk pregnancies in the capital area and also those from other parts of Oman which need multi disciplinary care. In 2009, the total numbers of deliveries were 7112 with Caesarian Section rate of 20%.

rh_dep_ultrasoundREFERRAL OB/GYNAE SPECIALTY CLINIC
The number of patients seen in this clinic is around 1200 per month. The following specialized clinics are run:

  • Early Pregnancy Clinic
  • Fertility Clinic
  • Referral Gynae Clinic
  • High Risk Clinic
  • Oncology Clinic
  • Pregnancy with Diabetes Clinic
  • Endoscopy & Gynae Endocrinology Clinic & OPD Hysteroscopy
  • Maternal Medicine
  • Colposcopy Clinic
  • Fetal Medicine

In the clinic there are sophisticated ultrasound machines which have maternal and Fetal Doppler study as well as 3D / 4D ultrasonography for selected patients.

There is also an area for health education and for the dietician.  The clinic has its own pharmacy.  In this area there is also an area for outpatient hysteroscopy, colposcopy and intra uterine insemination, and a dedicated area for daycare patients who need monitoring. 

rh_dep_laparoscopy-OPERATION THEATRE
There are three theatres which are adjacent to the Delivery Suite.  One is for elective caesarian section, one for Gynae procedures and one for emergency either for caesarian section or gynae surgery.  The gynae theatre is equipped with endoscopic equipment for endoscopic surgery, which are performed twice per week. The Royal Hospital is known for the endsocopic unit in gynae and most of the patients in the country are referred to this centre
