ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
The department reports to the Deputy Director General (Medical) of the Royal Hospital.
Each department in the hospital is represented by focal points or CME coordinators, who act as links between their departments and the Training Department for any CME activity.
The Education and Training Department implements all the policies decided by the CPE Committee through its six different sections:
Section I: It is concerned with conferences, symposia, workshops and guest lectures. It is responsible for the announcements, registration, coordination and direction within the framework of the Royal Hospital’s rules and regulations. At the beginning of each year, a calendar of activities which are to be conducted in the hospital is prepared. Hence, in August of the previous year, a letter is sent to all the departments to plan in advance their activities to book the venue. This calendar is displayed in the intranet portal and in the hospital’s website.
Section II: It includes short term training, and consists of two categories: medical and non medical attachments.
For both categories, confidentiality forms are signed, and ID cards issued.
In addition, evaluation forms are filled, signed by the direct supervisor and stamped by the Education and Training Department. No certificates are issued.
The trainees are of 2 categories: Category 1 includes Omani students who are studying abroad who desire a summer placement. Category 2 consists of graduate and post-graduate candidates from medical and non medical fields who are employed in various MOH institutions who desire specific short-term on-the-job training. The application form should be sent 4-6 months in advance.
Section III: It is responsible for short courses, of 3 main categories:
Category 1 includes the courses which are organized and done by the Education and Training Department, such as CPR courses.
Category 2 includes the courses that are run by other departments in liaison with the Education Department, such as Basic Physical Assessment Sessions run by the Nursing Clinical Facilitation Unit.
Category 3 includes the courses which are conducted by other departments, such as ECG course for Nurses, which require only the PG Center venue.
No scheduled course is cancelled without a compelling reason. Additional courses may be added according to the needs of the departments.
Section IV: This section includes media and audio-visual equipment and medical photography.
Intra and internet activities of the Education and Training Department are in liaison with the Computer Department and the Administration.
A newsletter of all the CME activities is prepared every 4 months.
Section V: It is involved in accreditation of CME and CNE activities at the Royal Hospital. Accreditation of CME and CNE Activities are done by the Oman Medical Specialty Board in liaison with the Education and Training Department.
Section VI: It includes the Medical Ethics and Scientific Research Committee, which was formed in late 2009 to promote and regulate clinical research at the Royal Hospital. The proposal for research studies are reviewed by the committee for approval, and one day per month is assigned for a seminar to present the research.
