ACTIVITIES
About 150 patients report per day at the Adult Emergency. 70-80% of these cases are medical and the remaining are mainly surgical in nature. On reporting at the reception, so as to prioritize the urgency of care, patients are assessed by triage nurse and categorized into red, yellow or green depending on the seriousness of the case. Casual walk-ins with no emergency condition are directed to their respective health center.
Patients examined in the resuscitation or major treatment areas are managed by the A&E staff, though the respective Specialty Registrar on call is paged if an emergency consultation or admission is warranted. The patient is thereafter admitted, discharged or referred for follow-up to the health center closest to the patients residence. When a patient presents in a critical condition, the A&E has the option to activate Code 555 (for cardiac arrest) or Code 333 (for polytrauma) to summon additional help. A disaster plan has also been prepared and is rehearsed once a year to ensure emergency preparedness by the hospital in coping with a massive inflow of victims of any disaster.
Trauma cases should normally report at Khoula Hospital, where the specialties of Orthopedics, Neurosurgery and Plastic Surgery are based. But quite often, particularly when the accident occurs in the vicinity of the hospital or around Al Khodh and Seeb, the victims are brought to Royal Hospital. Cases with minor injuries are treated and disposed off, while major trauma cases are stabilized and then transferred to Khoula Hospital. Polytrauma cases requiring predominantly the expertise of Thoracic Surgery, Urology or Pediatric Surgery are admitted to Royal Hospital.
The Adult Emergency is an active teaching department for nurses and undergraduate doctors and collaborates with the Oman Medical Specialty Board for training of doctors admitted to the post-graduate Residency Program.
